George Y asked:

Why does a typical 8-port FastEthernet switch cost between $50 and $200, but the same port count with wireless capability costs $2000?

Because a 8 port switch with wireless is an industrial switch, usually with features such as managing bandwidth, IGP snooping, and expanded logging. An un-managed 8 port switch is a much simpler affair.

For home use, use a wireless router and couple of 4 port switches. You get what you need for home use for about $120
