I have a 50 user network that has heavy multimedia applications being exchanged or worked on the network.

Im looking for a real good ethernet switch with a high performance processor and onboard memory etc etc. What would you suggest?

Thanks guys

If I were in your position, long before I had 50 users dependent on it, I would have hired a professional to network everything. If you’re looking for a cheap solution, any 50 port 10/100 (or 10/100/1000 if the computers have gigabit eathernet) switch will do the job just fine, but I’d strongly recommend getting someone knowledgeable on the scene, even if it’s more expensive.

I can’t give you an exact model, but I can tell you that Cisco makes some of the best ones. I have also heard good reviews on Juniper and 3Com equipment, but I know for a fact that Cisco would have something to suit your needs, you just need to plan how exactly you’re going to have your network laid-out (single switch or multiple switches with a router). They also support VLANs which are pretty useful.

Personally, my view is that once there’s enough ports on a Cisco switch, then there’s not much to worry about it not having enough processing power/memory.
